Australia launches UN-backed effort to combat tech-facilitated violence against women, investing $10M to hold abusers accountable.
On November 25, Australia joined the UN’s global campaign to end violence against women and girls, highlighting technology-facilitated abuse as a growing concern.
Research shows one woman is killed weekly by an intimate or former partner, and half of Australians have experienced tech-based abuse.
E-safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant noted that 40% of female and 32% of male survivors reported abuse from a current or former partner, stressing the link between digital abuse and domestic violence.
She called for a shift from focusing on victim safety to holding perpetrators accountable.
The government is investing $10 million over five years to combat the issue, with support available through esafety.gov.au, 1800RESPECT, 13YARN, the Men’s Referral Service, and Triple Zero (000).
