Wollongong proposes 15 new heritage sites, adding to 490 listings, with public review pending state approval.
Wollongong City Council has proposed 15 new sites for heritage protection, adding to the city’s 490 local heritage listings, including 24 on the NSW State Heritage Register.
Sites include sandstone kerbs in Helensburgh, St John Vianney Cathedral in Fairy Meadow, a former bank and commercial buildings in Port Kembla, a migrant boarding house, the Coledale RSL Club, homes in central Wollongong, and the former Crystal Clothing factory on Ellen Street.
The proposals, part of an update to the Local Environment Plan, will be sent to the state Planning Department and, if approved, will undergo a 28-day public exhibition.
Heritage listing requires sympathetic alterations but does not restrict ownership, use, or privacy, nor mandate conservation.
