Queensland’s environment minister admits land clearing for pasture drives reef pollution, but says new laws won’t address it directly.
Environment Minister Murray Watt acknowledged concerns over extensive land clearing in Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef catchment, where 86% of vegetation loss was for pasture, but stated the EPBC Act reforms focus on implementing a 2020 review’s recommendations that excluded land clearing.
Watt emphasized the legislation aims to improve environmental protection and streamline processes, noting not all issues can be resolved in one law.
While recognizing calls for stronger action from figures like Ken Henry, he said the government will support the most viable bipartisan proposal to pass the reforms, with no commitment to additional measures beyond the current package.
