The Merck Foundation event in Banjul brought African First Ladies and health leaders together to tackle healthcare access, infertility stigma, girls’ education, and medical training.
The 12th Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary 2025 convened in Banjul, The Gambia, co-chaired by Dr. Rasha Kelej and First Lady Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, bringing together African First Ladies and health officials to address healthcare access, infertility stigma, girls’ education, and research capacity.
The event highlighted the foundation’s ongoing scholarship programs, including 94 in The Gambia since 2017 and over 2,400 globally, supporting medical training in underserved fields.
Initiatives like Educating Linda and online health media training were spotlighted as key efforts to empower women and strengthen health systems across Africa.
