Hussaini Ismaila, a leader of ISWAP known as Mai Tangaran, was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Federal High Court in Abuja after pleading guilty to four terrorism charges related to coordinated 2012 attacks on police facilities in Kano State, including Police Headquarters in Bompai.
Arrested in 2017, his trial was delayed by appeals and a separate hearing on the voluntariness of his statements.
After five prosecution witnesses testified, he changed his plea, citing remorse.
Judge Emeka Nwite imposed concurrent sentences totaling 20 years from the date of arrest and ordered confinement in a correctional facility and participation in rehabilitation and deradicalization programs before possible reintegration.
