A former Transport for NSW official, Ibrahim Helmy, is accused of leading a 12-year kickback scheme involving $343 million in contracts and $11.5 million in bribes.
After being sacked and fleeing Australia in May 2024, he was stopped at Sydney Airport using an American passport and later found hiding in a Lakemba apartment in September.
His brother, Mohamed Helmy, testified he communicated with him via WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger while he was on the run, including a 34-minute call in June 2025, though he claimed not to know his brother’s location.
Mohamed denied stealing $300,000 from Ibrahim’s home, attributing the dispute to a failed cryptocurrency deal.
The ICAC inquiry continues to examine the extent of the corruption and family involvement.
