Five Chinese research ships operated near Kiribati and Guam in October, raising regional security concerns amid U.S. military drills.
In October, five Chinese research vessels, including the Yuanwang 7 space and missile tracking ship, operated in the northwest Pacific near Kiribati and east of Guam, according to the Pacific Center for Island Security.
The activity, linked to underwater mapping and surveillance, coincided with nine U.S. multilateral military exercises involving allies like Australia, Japan, India, and South Korea.
The center warns that expanded naval and infrastructure activities by both China and the U.S. increase risks for Pacific island nations, which could become targets due to modern military technology.
The monitoring project is funded by private donors.
China’s foreign ministry and Kiribati did not comment.
