Canada’s Senate passes changes to restore First Nations status to thousands by ending gender-based barriers in the Indian Act.
The Canadian Senate has passed amendments to Bill S-2, removing the second-generation cutoff for First Nations status and adopting a one-parent rule to allow status to be passed down through either parent, addressing gender inequities in the Indian Act.
The change could restore status to about 6,000 people and follows advocacy from Indigenous leaders, though concerns remain over consultation and implementation.
The bill now moves to the House of Commons for review and voting before it can become law.
