UK lacks defence plan for attacks, risks NATO commitments, and is boosting domestic weapons production.
A UK parliamentary defence committee has warned the country lacks a formal plan to defend itself or its overseas territories from military attack, failing to meet NATO commitments and falling short of its stated role in European security.
The report, based on an 11-month inquiry, found the UK remains overly dependent on the US for critical capabilities like intelligence, satellites, and air refuelling, and has minimal integrated air and missile defence.
It criticized slow progress on civil defence, industrial readiness, and interdepartmental coordination, urging faster reforms and clearer public communication on threats.
In response, the Ministry of Defence is identifying 13 sites across England, Scotland, and Wales for up to six new munitions factories, with plans to restart domestic energetics production and open drone factories by 2029.
The government aims to raise defence spending to 3% of GDP by 2034.
