South Oxfordshire Council denied a permanent Traveller site due to unauthorized construction and environmental concerns.
South Oxfordshire District Council has rejected plans for a permanent Traveller site near Henley, England, after unauthorized construction—including roads, fencing, a caravan, and landscaping—was completed on land near Digberry Farm.
The applicant submitted a retrospective application in July, claiming the site was for a single family pitch and agricultural grazing, but the council found the works exceeded temporary use and constituted a deliberate breach of planning rules.
Nearly 90 objections cited traffic, rural character loss, hedgerow damage, and the site’s location in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Despite claims of urgent family and medical needs, the council ruled the intentional unauthorized development outweighed these concerns, calling the project an unacceptable encroachment on open countryside.
