Sarnia proposes $25M for a new police HQ phase to fix safety and space issues at its aging facility.
Sarnia’s police service is proposing a $25 million Phase 1 for a new headquarters, delaying the full $91 million project to address urgent issues at the aging 38-year-old facility, including mold, unsafe prisoner handling, and inadequate training space.
The new station will be built on 4.7 hectares of donated land southeast of Highway 40 and London Line, with Phase 1 focusing on a training centre with a firing range and a replacement for the current leased 911 dispatch centre.
Financing the initial phase over 30 years at 4.59% would add about $1.5 million annually and 1.71 percentage points to the tax levy.
City council will review the plan on November 25, with concerns about costs, design, and inflation-driven delays.
