Pope Leo XIV has elevated St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral in Dublin to official cathedral status, marking the first time in 500 years the city has had a dedicated Catholic cathedral.
The announcement, made on November 14, 2025, by Archbishop Dermot Farrell during a Mass celebrating the church’s 200th anniversary and St. Laurence O’Toole’s feast day, corrects a centuries-old ecclesiastical imbalance rooted in the Reformation and British rule.
The church, located in the city’s north inner district, will undergo a $23 million renovation to address structural shortcomings and better serve the community amid Dublin’s rapid urban and social changes.
