Peru to launch India-inspired digital payment system by 2026.
Peru plans to launch a UPI-like real-time digital payment system by 2026, becoming the first South American country to adopt the technology, according to Peruvian Ambassador Javier Manuel Paulinich Velarde.
The system, developed through a 2024 partnership between India’s NPCI International Payments Limited and Peru’s Central Reserve Bank, aims to enable instant, secure transactions and expand financial inclusion for unbanked populations.
Modeled after India’s Unified Payments Interface, which processes over a billion daily transactions, the initiative marks a major step in Peru’s digital transformation and extends India’s digital payment influence beyond Asia.
