A new platform and track upgrades at Wells, Maine, enable Amtrak Downeaster trains to run simultaneously, improving service by 2026.
A new passenger platform at Wells Transportation Center in Maine, completed in December 2024, allows Amtrak Downeaster trains traveling in opposite directions to serve Wells simultaneously.
The project, led by NNEPRA and funded by federal and state agencies and CSX, includes a six-mile passing track extension and an accessible overhead bridge with elevators.
Expected to be fully operational by fall 2026, the upgrades will support an additional Downeaster round-trip, offering southern Maine commuters car-free access to Greater Portland, along with improved rail efficiency through signal enhancements.
