Melbourne’s new car park tax boosts fees to fund walking and cycling upgrades, aiming to cut emissions and congestion.
Melbourne is implementing a car park tax increase expected to generate $100 million annually, with $15 million directed to improve walking and cycling infrastructure across five inner-city councils.
Rates will rise in two zones: Category 1 areas, including the CBD and Docklands, will see fees jump from $1,690 to $3,030, while Category 2 zones, expanded to include Richmond, Prahran, and South Yarra, will increase from $1,240 to $2,150.
The measure, supported by crossbench parties, aims to boost active transport, though city leaders and operators warn higher costs could deter visitors and raise rents by up to 90%.
The levy is projected to bring in $229 million by 2026/27.
