Canadian PM Carney visits Abu Dhabi and South Africa to boost trade and investment ahead of the G20 summit.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is visiting Abu Dhabi and South Africa ahead of the G20 summit, aiming to strengthen trade ties in energy, critical minerals, agriculture, and artificial intelligence.
His trip to Abu Dhabi marks the first by a Canadian PM since 1983 and includes meetings with UAE leadership and business leaders to boost investment and diversify exports beyond the U.S. Carney will then attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg, his first as prime minister, where he plans to discuss expanded trade with South Africa.
The visits come amid ongoing negotiations for a Foreign Investment Protection Agreement and growing scrutiny over Canada’s decision to reduce international development aid to pre-pandemic levels.
