U.S. 12th-grade girls are significantly less certain about marriage than in 1993, with rising uncertainty and declining fertility hopes, unlike boys.
A Pew analysis comparing surveys from 1993 and 2023 finds that uncertainty about marriage among 12th grade girls has risen sharply, with 24% saying they have “no idea” if they want to marry, up from 16% in 1993.
Meanwhile, those likely to marry fell from 83% to 61%.
Boys’ intentions remained steady.
Fertility aspirations among girls also declined, from 64% to 48%.
Experts link the changes to societal shifts such as increased gender equality, economic independence, and evolving life goals, though the findings reflect long-term intentions rather than predicted behavior.
