Taiwan detains Chinese national, alleged spy, for recruiting military personnel under Beijing’s orders.
Taiwan has detained a Chinese national, identified only as Ding, on suspicion of espionage, alleging he acted under Chinese military orders to recruit retired and active-duty military personnel for intelligence gathering.
Ding, a Hong Kong resident who entered Taiwan under false pretenses, led a network that included two retired officers and targeted active-duty personnel.
Six others, including two serving officers indicted, were also detained.
Taiwan’s security agencies say the case is notable for involving a mainland Chinese national entering Taiwan directly, unlike past operations relying on local collaborators.
The incident highlights escalating Chinese infiltration efforts, with Taiwan reporting a sharp rise in such cases, and underscores ongoing cross-strait tensions amid increased military pressure from Beijing.
