Supreme Court orders India to respond in 4 weeks on airline pricing and baggage rule challenges.
The Supreme Court has directed the Indian government, DGCA, and AERA to respond within four weeks to a public interest litigation challenging unpredictable airline pricing, reduced baggage allowances, and lack of consumer protections.
The petition, filed by activist S. Laxminarayanan, alleges that algorithm-driven fare hikes, sudden price surges, and the reduction of free baggage from 25 kg to 15 kg violate fundamental rights including equality, freedom of movement, and life with dignity.
It calls for an independent aviation regulator to oversee fares and ancillary charges, citing unfair practices that disproportionately impact lower-income and last-minute travelers.
The court has scheduled a hearing after the response period.
