Ontario plans public access to sex offender registry under Christopher’s Law amid safety concerns.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford is exploring public access to the province’s sex offender registry, known as Christopher’s Law, following a Supreme Court of Canada ruling that eliminated mandatory minimum sentences for child pornography offences.
Ford argues the change is necessary to protect families and says he would use the notwithstanding clause to defend the measure if challenged in court.
The proposal, named after 11-year-old Christopher Stephenson, who was murdered in 1988 by a registered offender, comes amid heightened public safety concerns, including a suspected arson death and cemetery thefts in the Greater Toronto Area.
