Nearly 70% of 24 tested toys from online marketplaces failed safety standards due to dangerous button batteries, posing serious ingestion risks to children.
A consumer safety warning has been issued ahead of Christmas after testing found nearly 70% of 24 toys from online marketplaces like Shein, AliExpress, eBay, and Amazon failed Australian safety standards due to button battery risks.
Seventeen of the toys had serious flaws, including battery compartments accessible without tools, missing warnings, and loose screws, posing a severe ingestion hazard.
Button batteries can cause life-threatening injuries within hours if swallowed, with about 20 children in Australia hospitalized weekly, and one child per month suffering serious, long-term harm.
While Amazon and eBay removed the unsafe items after being notified, Shein did not respond and AliExpress dismissed the findings.
Despite mandatory safety standards for button batteries since 2022, they do not apply to third-party sellers on online marketplaces, leaving a regulatory gap.
Choice is urging stronger laws to hold all sellers, including platforms, accountable and has reported findings to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
