Most Mainers can now renew their Real IDs online, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles announced, as part of a new system launched by the secretary of state’s office to reduce wait times and improve access.
The change, effective immediately, allows most residents to renew without an in-person visit, helping prepare for the May 2025 federal deadline requiring TSA-compliant IDs for air travel and federal facility access.
However, first-time applicants, those with commercial licenses, name changes, medical conditions, or non-U.S. citizens must still visit a BMV office.
Officials encourage those with scheduled in-person appointments to cancel them to help others.
More details are available on the Department of the Secretary of State website.
