Manitoba opens 72-hour drug-intoxication centre in Winnipeg to provide medical care and treatment links.
Manitoba is launching a 72-hour protective care centre in Winnipeg by late November 2025 to detain individuals severely intoxicated by drugs like methamphetamines, offering medical supervision and connections to addiction and mental health services.
The facility, operated by the Main Street Project near a high school, will have 20 initial rooms with basic amenities and surveillance, staffed by paramedics and equipped for regular assessments.
The move follows new legislation extending detention from 24 to 72 hours to address prolonged stimulant effects.
Officials say it’s a public health alternative to incarceration or emergency room overload, though some critics call it punitive confinement.
Future centres may open in Brandon and Thompson.
