Irish officer loses lawsuit over punishment for raising gun holster safety concerns.
A senior Irish police officer, Brian O’Reilly, lost a court case claiming he was punished for raising safety concerns about leather gun holsters used by Garda officers.
He argued the holsters, supplied by a non-specialist saddlery, posed risks of accidental discharges and were linked to a 2020 shooting incident and the murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan.
Despite presenting evidence and alleging retaliation, including potential loss of his home, a judge ruled there was insufficient proof the Garda Commissioner penalized him for whistleblowing.
The safety concerns remain documented, but no retaliation was proven.
