Fairfax police probe $175K ATM heist via "jackpotting" scheme using malware and a black box device.
Fairfax County police are investigating a $175,000 ATM theft at an Apple Federal Credit Union in Fair Oaks, Virginia, linked to a "jackpotting" scheme.
The attack, which occurred over the night of October 3–4, involved suspects using physical access and malware or a "black box" device to override security systems, forcing the machine to dispense cash without cards.
Surveillance footage shows a suspect returning multiple times in a blue Jeep, with one individual filming the machine and another triggering cash withdrawals by holding a phone near the ATM.
Authorities believe the crime was coordinated and are seeking public help to identify the suspects.
The FBI and local law enforcement are collaborating on the investigation.
