A consultant says a 2016 statement accusing Sinn Féin’s lawyers of IRA payment stands as fact, in a defamation trial.
A communications consultant for Irish businessman Denis O’Brien testified in Ireland’s High Court that he stands by a 2016 press release stating “Sinn Féin/IRA certainly got the report they paid for,” which solicitors Darragh Mackin and Gavin Booth claim defamed them by implying they were paid by the IRA.
The statement was issued in response to a media ownership report they co-authored for Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan.
James Morrissey, who drafted the release, denied malice, said it was fact-based, and defended its accuracy despite cross-examination over omitted criticisms and references to a British journalist with past IRA ties.
The trial continues before Mr Justice Tony O’Connor.
