Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall expands next month with the Albert Street extension, enhancing walkability under the Cross River Rail project.
The Queen Street Mall in Brisbane will expand next month with the opening of the Albert Street extension, a pedestrian-focused project previously known as the "Green Spine" under the Cross River Rail initiative.
The upgrade, part of a three-stage rollout ending in 2026, will integrate businesses into the Queen Street Mall Central Area Plan starting next financial year.
While walkability will improve, vehicles will still be allowed on Elizabeth, Charlotte, and Mary Streets.
The mall, opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1982, saw nearly 250,000 daily visitors in July 2025, according to council estimates.
The project builds on infrastructure initiated by the former state Labor government.
