Bangladesh’s court sentenced former PM Sheikh Hasina to death over 2024 protest crackdown; she denies charges, fleeing to India.
Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death in absentia on charges of crimes against humanity linked to a 2024 crackdown on student-led protests that erupted over a controversial civil service jobs quota.
The unrest, which followed the Supreme Court’s decision to reduce the quota from 30% to 5%, resulted in hundreds to over 1,400 deaths, according to varying estimates.
Hasina, who fled to India in August 2024 after 15 years in power, denies the charges, calling the trial politically motivated.
Other senior officials were also convicted.
The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has banned her Awami League party from upcoming elections.
The verdict, delivered on November 17, 2025, has heightened regional tensions and raised concerns over judicial independence and political stability.
