Anchorage proposes a 3% sales tax to fund city services amid fiscal crisis, with a vote set for April 2026.
Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance has proposed a 3% sales tax to generate $148–176 million annually, addressing a severe fiscal crisis caused by declining state funding.
The tax, exempting essentials like groceries, housing, medicine, utilities, and gasoline, would fund property tax relief, public safety, infrastructure, housing, and child care.
If approved, it would take effect no earlier than July 2028, with a vote expected in April 2026.
The city faces deep service cuts without new revenue, and the proposal is one of several under consideration.
