The UK will replace Police and Crime Commissioners with elected mayors by 2028, centralizing policing oversight.
The UK government has announced the abolition of Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) by 2028, replacing them with directly elected mayors responsible for policing and crime.
Jonathan Ash-Edwards, Hertfordshire’s PCC since May 2024, said the change was anticipated and affirmed his continued focus on delivering public safety, citing 32,000 additional high-visibility patrols and a 1,200 rise in solved crimes in early 2025.
While supporting ongoing work until his term ends in May 2028, he expressed concern that centralizing policing oversight could weaken local accountability and distance decision-making from community needs.
The transition will shift responsibilities to elected mayors or council leaders as current PCC terms conclude.
