South Africa’s Madlanga Commission investigates 121 political killings cases transferred after a provincial head refused to act, with top officials denying wrongdoing.
The Madlanga Commission is investigating the handling of 121 investigative dockets transferred from South Africa’s disbanded KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team to national police headquarters.
Testimony revealed the files were moved after then-provincial commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi refused to engage with them, and were later retained under suspended deputy national commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, who claims he acted on orders from national commissioner Fannie Masemola.
The dockets, many involving killings of traditional leaders, were returned to the PKTT in August.
The inquiry continues to examine accountability and transparency in high-profile political violence cases.
