Sen. Shaheen warns Trump’s Venezuela military moves divert forces from key regions and lack public justification.
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., warned on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that President Trump’s military buildup near Venezuela, including deploying the USS Gerald R. Ford to the Caribbean, is diverting critical U.S. forces from key regions like the Middle East, Indo-Pacific, and Europe.
She questioned the administration’s unclear strategy behind expanded strikes on suspected drug trafficking vessels and expressed concern over potential ground operations, stressing the lack of public justification for the actions despite a Justice Department legal opinion shared only with lawmakers.
While the Pentagon says the mission targets narcotics trafficking and transnational crime, Shaheen argued Maduro’s alleged role does not pose a direct national security threat.
Trump has simultaneously signaled openness to diplomacy, even as the U.S. offers a $50 million reward for Maduro’s arrest.
