Bhutan ordained over 260 women as nuns in a landmark ceremony, advancing gender equality in Vajrayana Buddhism.
Bhutan held its second historic Bhikkhuni ordination ceremony from November 15 to 19, ordaining over 260 nuns from 14 countries at a Thimphu training center.
Led by the Je Khenpo and organized by the Bhutan Nuns Foundation with support from the Central Monastic Body, the event marked a milestone for women’s full monastic ordination in the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition.
It concluded the Global Peace Prayers series and honored the 70th anniversary of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.
The closed-door ceremony included Dharma name bestowal, blessings, and distribution of robes and alms bowls.
Organizers said the event advances gender equality in spiritual practice and fulfills the ideal of a complete fourfold sangha.
