A Ballarat man received an 18-month community order for threatening racist email to Senator Fatima Payman.
A 51-year-old Ballarat man, Sean David Sharman, was given an 18-month community corrections order instead of jail after pleading guilty to sending a racist and threatening email to Senator Fatima Payman, Australia’s first hijab-wearing female senator.
The message, which included violent threats and targeted her gender, race, and religion, caused significant emotional distress and impacted her ability to travel and serve.
Magistrate Julia Barling called the email deeply offensive and unacceptable, noting Sharman’s mental health struggles and alcohol use, but emphasized that projecting personal trauma onto a public figure through online threats is not justifiable.
He must complete treatment for alcohol and mental health issues and refrain from further threatening conduct.
