A five-year-old boy in Hull suffered severe, permanent injuries after being attacked by an XL Bully named Chappy, which he believed was a small puppy, during a visit to a family home in May 2024.
The 11-month-old dog, owned by Courteney Chearman, who had not completed the legal exemption to own the breed, was left with her mother, Victoria Marks, without safety measures.
The dog lunged and bit the boy’s head, causing partial scalp loss requiring a skin graft and lifelong hair loss.
Marks, who was bitten while intervening, received a suspended sentence and a 10-year ban from dog ownership.
Chearman was sentenced to 70 hours of unpaid work.
The dog was seized and euthanized in October 2024.
The case underscores risks linked to high-risk breeds and the need for responsible ownership and safety precautions.
