Sam Lovell, a pioneering Aboriginal tourism entrepreneur from Western Australia’s Kimberley region, has died.
He founded Kimberley Safari Tours, the first Aboriginal tourism business in WA, and was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for his work.
Lovell built relationships with station owners to launch his venture, helping establish the Kimberley as a major tourism destination.
He mentored Indigenous tourism businesses and preserved cultural history through decades of photography, beginning with a box brownie camera.
His life and legacy were celebrated in a 2025 State Library exhibition and the 2023 documentary *Mr Kimberley*.
