A rare 19th-century carved lidded bowl by Ngāti Pikiao master carver Patoromu Tamatea, one of only three known examples, is set for auction in Auckland on November 24, with an estimated value of up to $300,000.
The kumete whakairo, featuring detailed tā moko and traditional patterns, was created during a period of rising European interest in Māori art and was originally gifted to a Scottish-born politician who helped mediate a land dispute.
Registered under New Zealand’s Protected Objects Act, the bowl cannot leave the country but was temporarily taken to Melbourne for exhibition.
The auction house says it feels confident in offering the piece due to its historical significance and documented provenance.
