Prominent Zamfara State APC chieftain Umar Moriki, 62, was killed by gunmen on Saturday morning along the Gusau–Tsafe highway near Fegi village while returning from a party stakeholders meeting hosted by Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle.
Moriki, who held multiple political and administrative roles including vice-chairman of Zurmi LGA and special adviser on rural electrification, had also contested the 2023 House of Representatives election.
The attack, suspected to be carried out by armed bandits, has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in northwestern Nigeria.
APC leaders and supporters gathered in Gusau for his funeral, with Matawalle canceling his hometown engagements to attend.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear.
