A Minnesota man drowned in North Dakota while trying to rescue his dog from icy water.
A 30-year-old Minnesota man, Christopher Hendricks, died in a drowning accident on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, while attempting to rescue his dog from a slough in the Eszlinger Waterfowl Production Area in McIntosh County, North Dakota.
Hendricks swam to the dog, which was trapped in thin ice, but showed signs of distress during the return to shore.
His friend, Maxwell DiVenere, tried to help but could not prevent Hendricks from submerging.
Emergency services responded, and a multi-agency search involving fire, rescue, dive, and drone teams recovered Hendricks’ body about 40 to 50 yards from shore on Thursday afternoon.
No autopsy will be performed, as the death was a witnessed drowning with no signs of foul play.
Multiple local, state, and federal agencies assisted, and officials praised the coordinated response.
