Ireland sees rise in organized political extremism, with threats against officials and migrants, leading to arrests and heightened security.
Irish political extremism has shifted from isolated rhetoric to organized efforts targeting state institutions and individuals, Prime Minister Micheál Martin said, citing threats against politicians and migrants, and a far-right plot to attack a Galway mosque that led to two arrests.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly confirmed a moderate threat level, with fewer than 10 violent extremist groups under surveillance, some with international links, and highlighted growing online threats against public officials and asylum seekers.
The remarks were made during the largest Garda attestation since 2019, with 194 new officers and 17 reserves joining.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan urged the public to report suspicious activity.
