India to deploy 16 homegrown laser drone defenses with 10-km range, following successful tests.
India is set to induct 16 indigenous laser-based drone detection and interdiction systems, with a 10-kilowatt laser capable of disabling enemy drones up to 2 kilometers away—double the range of earlier models.
The systems, developed by DRDO, are expected to be approved by the Defence Ministry following successful tests, including a field trial in Kurnool that demonstrated the ability to destroy fixed-wing UAVs and disrupt drone swarms.
India has also tested a more powerful 30-kilowatt laser weapon with a 5-kilometer range, capable of neutralizing aircraft, missiles, and drone swarms.
These advancements, driven by rising drone threats like those during Pakistan’s Operation Sindoor, place India among a select group of nations—including the U.S., China, and Russia—with proven high-energy laser combat capabilities.
DRDO is also advancing other directed-energy technologies like high-energy microwaves and electromagnetic pulses for future defense systems.
