Descendants of African Americans who escaped slavery and settled in Grey County, Ontario, are featured in the “North is Freedom” photo exhibit at Owen Sound’s BME Church, which opened November 15, 2025.
Photographer Yuri Dojc, inspired by the region’s Underground Railroad history, captured portraits of individuals connected to this legacy, many of whom have ties to the church established in 1911.
The exhibit, previously shown at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and other venues, includes reunions like that of Steve Harris and cousin Carl Stevenson, who connected through DNA research, and Dorothy Abbott, who preserves her family’s history through a quilt.
The event also raised funds for a new heat pump to maintain the church’s community space.
