Central West’s road fatality rate is triple the state average, prompting 60 safety initiatives focused on better signage and bypass use.
A draft transport plan released November 3, 2025, reveals the Central West region’s road fatality rate is three times the state average, prompting over 60 safety initiatives.
The plan, developed with community and stakeholder input, focuses on improving signage and navigation to ensure freight vehicles use bypasses like Orange’s Northern Distributor Road, built in 2013 but inconsistently used due to unclear routing and outdated apps.
It also promotes use of the Parkes bypass and explores new bypasses for Dubbo, Bathurst, Cowra, and Blayney.
No location is currently prioritized, as efficiency studies continue and public feedback will guide implementation.
