A Canadian group demands stronger gun laws ahead of the 1989 Montreal massacre anniversary, criticizing the government’s inaction on banning assault-style rifles despite past promises.
A Canadian gun control group, PolySeSouvient, is urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to take stronger action on gun safety ahead of the December 6 anniversary of the 1989 Montreal massacre, warning that Liberal MPs' planned participation in White Ribbon Day events would be hypocritical given the government’s failure to fully ban assault-style firearms, particularly the semi-automatic SKS rifle.
The group argues that despite banning about 2,500 firearms since 2020 and launching a buyback program, the government has not implemented a comprehensive ban, delayed enforcement of measures to revoke gun licenses for those convicted of intimate partner violence, and failed to act on legislation passed nearly two years ago.
Over 50 women’s organizations support the call for urgent reforms to enhance public safety and honor the victims.
