Brazil’s ex-human rights minister Silvio Almeida accused of sexual misconduct; case highlights rising gender-based violence in Brazil.
Brazil’s federal police have formally accused Silvio Almeida, former human rights minister under President Lula, of sexual misconduct following his dismissal in September 2024 amid multiple allegations, including claims by São Paulo professor Isabel Rodrigues and Anielle Franco, a minister and sister of slain councilwoman Marielle Franco.
Almeida denies the accusations.
Prosecutors must now decide whether to file charges, which would be reviewed by the Supreme Court.
The case has drawn national attention to Brazil’s rising gender-based violence crisis, with a 2025 report showing over one in three women experienced such violence—the highest rate since 2017.
