Bangladesh restores 44 ponds to boost climate resilience and reduce flooding.
Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan launched the restoration of 44 government-owned ponds in Dhaka and nearby areas, marking a key step in climate resilience and environmental conservation.
Funded by the Climate Change Trust Fund, the project aims to restore ecological functions by clearing encroachments, re-excavating ponds, building protective banks, controlling pollution, and constructing ghats and walkways.
Tree planting and community involvement are also part of the effort.
The initiative targets flood reduction, improved rainwater retention, and support for agriculture and fisheries.
Hasan urged officials to inventory remaining water bodies and proceed with phased restoration, while emphasizing public awareness and enforcement against plastic pollution.
