Two of Canada’s wealthiest families, the Westons and Thomsons, have jointly bid $18 million for the 1670 royal charter founding Hudson’s Bay Company, aiming to donate it to four public institutions in Manitoba, the Canadian Museum of History, and the Royal Ontario Museum.
The offer includes $5 million for preservation, education, and public access, with support from other major donors.
The charter, central to Canada’s colonial history, would be housed in Manitoba and displayed publicly there first.
The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation endorsed the plan for its focus on Indigenous inclusion.
Hudson’s Bay Company will seek court approval for the auction on November 21, with bidding closing November 28 and an auction scheduled for December 3.
