Spain now mandates rail refunds for 15+ minute train delays, boosting passenger rights.
Spain’s parliament has passed a law requiring Renfe to compensate passengers for 15-minute delays on its high-speed AVE and other long-distance trains, reversing a 2024 policy that raised refund thresholds.
Passengers will now receive 50% refunds for delays of 15 minutes or more and full refunds for 30-minute delays.
The change, part of the Sustainable Mobility Act, passed with support from multiple parties despite opposition from the Transport Ministry, which warned of potential financial and competitive impacts.
The new rules are expected to take effect soon, strengthening passenger rights in Spain’s rail system.
