Quinte Conservation unveiled a wind phone in Sidney Conservation Area, a symbolic, nature-based memorial for grieving loved ones.
Quinte Conservation has installed a wind phone in Sidney Conservation Area, a symbolic tribute for grieving loved ones, built from reclaimed materials with a heart-shaped design and Morse code spelling “love.” Located in a natural setting, the unconnected phone allows visitors to speak aloud, with the wind carrying their words.
Inspired by a similar project in Japan and proposed by communications specialist Kirsten Geisler after her father’s death, the installation supports emotional healing through nature.
Funded in part by the Alva Foundation, it is part of broader trail upgrades and has been praised by volunteers and staff, including Tammy Smith, who lost her husband in 2008.
The project reflects a growing movement, with hundreds of wind phones now worldwide, offering quiet, personal spaces for remembrance.
