A judge ordered a recount in Paradise-Topsail after a close election, with the margin just 1.6%.
A Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court judge has ordered a recount in the Paradise-Topsail riding after the Liberal Party challenged the Oct. 14 provincial election results.
The recount, prompted by allegations of inconsistent ballot handling—including some circled names being rejected while others were counted—follows a narrow 102-vote victory for incumbent Progressive Conservative Paul Dinn over Liberal Dan Bobbett.
The judge denied recounts in two other ridings but granted the request in Paradise-Topsail, where the margin was about 1.6% of the 6,300 votes cast.
The recount, set to begin next week, could impact the balance of power, as the Progressive Conservatives currently hold a one-seat majority in the 40-member legislature.
Under provincial law, recounts are automatic if the margin is 10 votes or less, but candidates may also request them if they can prove errors.
The outcome remains uncertain.
